What is a mental illness? The term ‘mental illness’ describes a group of illnesses that affect the way a person thinks, feels, interacts with others and deals with the everyday challenges of life. Mental illnesses include: Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anorexia and bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic and other severe anxiety disorders, autism and pervasive developmental disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and borderline personality disorder.  How many people are affected by mental illness? One in every five Australians will be affected by mental illness at some stage of their life. While some people might experience only mild and intermittent effects of a mental illness, others can face more serious effects that can recur throughout their lives.  What are the causes of mental illness? Although the exact causes are not known, it is believed that most mental illnesses are caused by a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors. Illegal substances including heroin, methamphetamines and cannabis may also be linked to mental illness. Estimates on the scale of dual diagnosis in Australia vary, but include: - About 25 per cent of people with anxiety disorders, affective disorders and substance use disorders also have another mental disorder.
- Around 64 per cent of psychiatric in-patients may have a current or previous drug use problem.
- Around 75 per cent of people with alcohol and substance use problems may have a mental illness.
- About 90 per cent of males with schizophrenia may have a substance use problem.
 What impact is mental illness having on health care resources? Australia spends around 7% of its health budget on mental health. While comparisons with other health areas are problematic, mental health accounts for at least 20% of total health costs due to death and disability. Can people recover from mental illness? People can and do recover from mental illness. Through accommodation and support services, the RFNSW gives service users the confidence and skills they need to live a meaningful and happy life.
